Let’s have a chat about this whole AI (Artificial Intelligence) thing that’s got the world in a spin ever since ChatGPT came out in December 2022 (see me talking about that over here: My new friend, the ‘chatGPT’ AI).
Following my last post, my old mate David asked me what I thought about AI. I’ve spent some time pondering this since he asked, and considering how I would write about it, but I wasn’t entirely sure where to start or what to write about, so I wrote him an email last night asking for his detailed views on AI himself, which was my way of starting a conversation. Some of my best blog posts come from emails or online chats with friends, so it’s a good strategy I make use of occasionally. And it worked on this occasion too! We spent some time chatting about it online this morning, and from it, I have a blog post.
Just to let you know, as kind of a disclaimer, this blog post was created with the help of AI, and to be honest, it’s probably something I’m going to make use of in most cases as we move forward. I took some of the email and chat content (respecting privacy of course – always be careful about what you put into AI, understanding it becomes part of the ‘public domain’ and is accessible to AI companies and their partners for review and further AI training) and I used it as source material for AI to consolidate my views into an article, and here we are. I hope you enjoy, and if you have any comments or questions, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments section below!
So David has been reading a lot about the scary stuff – the scenarios where AI gets so smart it decides humans are more of a hindrance than a help. He was particularly focused on the jump from the AI we see now – clever at specific tasks – to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which could think and learn like us, and then the big one, Artificial Superintelligence (ASI), which would dwarf human intellect. The idea of creating something that vastly outsmarts us does give you pause, doesn’t it? He was quite concerned about this “alignment problem,” this fundamental challenge of ensuring these super-intelligent systems would actually want what we want. It’s a bit like trying to explain the beauty of a sunset to someone who can only see in black and white.
Now, I’m not one to bury my head in the sand. I understand that with any powerful tool, there are potential downsides. But my gut feeling about AI, the way I see it unfolding, leans more towards a sense of genuine excitement mixed with a healthy dose of cautious optimism, rather than outright dread.
You see, a lot of the really alarming stuff feels a bit like those old science fiction movies – dramatic, sure, but not necessarily grounded in where we are right now. When the arguments start with “it could happen” or “what if…”, my internal alarm bells ring a little. Life’s full of possibilities, both good and bad, and I prefer to base my understanding on what we know and what’s actually being worked on.
On a personal level, AI has already woven its way into my daily routine in some pretty amazing ways. It’s become this incredible tool for exploration and understanding. Got a burning question about something obscure? Need to get your head around a complex topic quickly? AI has become my go-to. It’s like having a super-charged research assistant that never sleeps. It helps me cut through the noise and get to the heart of the matter in a way that was unthinkable just a few years ago. It’s genuinely enhancing my ability to learn and understand the world around me. In ‘cyberpunk’ terms, I love having an enhanced mind, making me more capable at whatever I want, than just staying ‘natural’ or unenhanced.
We really are living in the future already. Can you see that?
What’s truly compelling, though, is the sheer brainpower being thrown at this whole AI development thing. It’s not just a bunch of tech bros in Silicon Valley tinkering away in isolation. There’s a massive, global community of brilliant minds – scientists, engineers, ethicists – all grappling with these very questions of safety and alignment. They’re actively researching ways to ensure that as AI becomes more advanced, it remains a force for good. When I looked into the efforts being made in AI alignment, the sheer scale and dedication were genuinely impressive. It’s not an afterthought; it’s a core focus, and it leaves me confident that we’re going to work out a solution to this problem.
It strikes me that our own mindset plays a huge role in how we perceive these advancements. If you’re already leaning towards a fearful outlook, you’ll likely find plenty of content online to reinforce that. It’s a bit of a human tendency, isn’t it? We seek out information that confirms what we already believe. But I actively try to maintain a more open and balanced perspective, focusing on the potential for progress while acknowledging the need for careful consideration.
I’m not saying we should just blindly charge ahead without a second thought. Responsible development and ethical considerations are paramount. But I have a fundamental belief in human ingenuity and our capacity to tackle complex challenges. Just as we’ve navigated the ethical and practical hurdles of other powerful technologies throughout history, I’m optimistic that we can do the same with AI.
Ultimately, my feeling about AI is one of genuine excitement tempered with a healthy dose of realism. I see the incredible potential it holds to revolutionise so many aspects of our lives, from tackling global challenges to simply making everyday tasks easier. Knowing that there’s a dedicated global effort to steer this development in a safe and beneficial direction gives me a strong sense of hope for the future. For me, it’s about embracing this technological leap with open eyes, a curious mind, and a belief in our collective ability to shape its trajectory for the better.
So, that’s my take on the AI whirlwind – more thrilling possibilities than terrifying pitfalls, I reckon. What are your own thoughts on this ever-evolving landscape? I’d genuinely love to hear your perspective.
